Hyperbolic Holes: this awesome kit is again available- fun with conic sections- a straight rod, in this case a pencil, glides through a symmetrical pair of curved holes. The design is based on the hyperboloid, the 3D ruled surface traced by an offset rotating diagonal line. This device is sold as an inexpensive kit to assemble yourself, and includes a motor with geared drive and pre-cut pieces. Bentuk unik Pringles bukan sekadar soal estetika atau kemasan, melainkan hasil perhitungan matematika dan prinsip fisika yang cukup kompleks. Setiap keripik Pringles dibuat dengan kurva khusus yang disebut hyperbolic paraboloid, yaitu permukaan yang melengkung ke dua arah sekaligus. Bentuk ini memungkinkan setiap keripik saling “mengunci” ketika disusun dengan orientasi yang sama. Saat satu keripik menekan keripik di bawahnya, gaya yang terjadi tidak hanya bergerak ke bawah, tetapi juga menyebar ke samping mengikuti lengkungan alami chip tersebut. Ketika beberapa keripik disusun membentuk lengkungan, gaya tekan dari tumpukan menciptakan gesekan di setiap titik sentuh antar keripik. Gesekan inilah yang mencegah keripik meluncur atau runtuh. Menariknya, semakin tinggi tumpukan yang terbentuk, semakin besar tekanan di bagian bawah, sehingga struktur justru menjadi lebih stabil, bukan sebaliknya. Prinsip ini sangat mirip dengan cara kerja lengkungan pada jembatan batu kuno, di mana tekanan dari setiap batu saling menahan agar bangunan tidak roboh. Saat susunan Pringles itu akhirnya membentuk lingkaran tertutup, semua gaya berada dalam kondisi seimbang. Tidak ada satu titik pun yang menerima beban berlebihan, sehingga struktur bisa berdiri sendiri tanpa bantuan tambahan. Fenomena sederhana ini sebenarnya mencerminkan prinsip fisika yang sama dengan struktur kubah, lengkungan bangunan bersejarah, dan arsitektur klasik yang telah bertahan ratusan tahun.
