Why I Prioritise Bike Training for Hyrox. I’ve made bike training a cornerstone of my Hyrox prep for a couple of key reasons: 1. Boosts Muscular Endurance Bike training is perfect for building muscular endurance, which is essential for stations like sled pushes, lunges, and wall balls. 2. Low-Impact, Unlike running, biking is low-impact, which means less strain on the joints while still boosting your aerobic and muscular endurance. It’s a great way to build strength and stamina without the risk of overuse injuries that can come with constant high-impact running. Caveat: Heart Rate Differences One thing to note — heart rate tends to be lower on the bike compared to running at similar intensities. To account for this, I like to go off effort or watts when cycling. Alternatively, I’ll lower my heart rate zones by 10 to 12 beats to make sure I’m working at a similar intensity to running. This adjustment helps ensure I’m getting the most out of my bike sessions while staying in the right training zones for Hyrox. Bonus Tip For better carryover to running, try to maintain a cadence of 85-95 rpm. I find it hard to take a full rest day the day before a race so this Primer session serves to deliver short bursts of intensity on the stations I'll be doing, without accumulating additional fatigue. I tend to do this the day before if at home or I'll do it before travelling or at a gym abroad then just do an easy run for 20 mins and finish with some strides if I'm racing away from home. Quality Training Sessions ⚡️ Throughout this Hyrox prep, similar to previous marathon training blocks, each week has 2 (sometimes 3) quality sessions. These workouts are generally higher volume and structured with high specificity. The intent is to really push during these workouts with the intent of creating an adaptation to get stronger and faster. Too many of these higher intensity sessions will reduce your ability to recover effectively, but when programmed with the right volume, intensity and frequency, they propel you forward. This morning was an example of a quality session: 9 mile run - 1 mile warm up + 4 x (1 mile hard, 1 mile easy) Hard miles: 5:58, 5:55, 5:57, 5:54

Running volume is one of the most misunderstood parts of HYROX prep. More running doesn’t automatically mean better performance… Especially when they come at the cost of recovery, strength, or consistency. For most HYROX athletes, effective running looks like: • 1 quality/threshold/interval run • 1 longer aerobic run • Optional 1 easy or mixed-effort run The rest of your aerobic work can and often should, Come from low-impact training to protect your body and keep quality high. This is going to look different for every athlete. Some people will handle more running better than others. THIS IS WHY it is so important not to try and do exactly what other athletes are doing and really hone in and work on the perfect balance for yourself. When I work with clients one of the biggest things I try and nail down first is how to make sure I can get them running well for the long term.
