Its first release came on June 15, 2007, in Germany, with the release for the rest of Europe occurring on June 18 and the rest of the world on June 19. Icky Thump received positive reviews from critics and enjoyed commercial success, entering the UK Albums Chart at number one and debuting at number two on the Billboard 200, becoming the duo’s highest-charting album in the US with 223,000 copies sold. By late July, Icky Thump was certified gold in the United States. Witnessing a tiny group of people accomplish such large, spectacular feats is just astounding. "Icky Thump" won the 2008 Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. While the 𝘐𝘤𝘬𝘺 𝘛𝘩𝘶𝘮𝘱 itself won Best Alternative Music Album. It was also a major hit for The White Stripes, becoming their first and only single to reach the Top 40 𝘉𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘣𝘰𝘢𝘳𝘥 Hot 100 chart. 𝘕𝘔𝘌 praised "Icky Thump" sonic adventure, highlighting that it has a "chaotic improvised snake-charming solo" played on the Univox keyboard, showing an inventive approach to rock. The White Stripes performing “Icky Thump” Live on …Later with Jools Holland According to an appearance on Jools Holland on the 1st of June, 2007, Jack White clarified that “Icky Thump” was inspired by a phrase he had heard his British wife, model Karen Elson, use, which was “Ecky Thump,” a Northern English phrase that means “What The Heck.” What Jack did was change it to the more American sounding “Icky” (meaning disgusting) so that teenagers could relate. In a way, he was also inspired by how Led Zeppelin dropped the “A” in “Lead” for the same reason. Lyrically, the song became a commentary on immigration, and how immigrants are treated unfairly in America.
