OB“How much does that giant snake eat?” is easily one of our most asked questions.
Judith is an 11-year-old Burmese python and a confirmed male now. Like most large constrictors, his metabolism is very slow and he spends a lot of his time being pretty sedentary. That means he doesn’t eat nearly as often as people expect. Judith’s meals are large frozen-thawed rabbits, usually weighing between 5–11 pounds, and he only actually eats about once every 1–4 months.
Through the winter, he’s offered food more frequently, but most of the time he simply isn’t interested. Large pythons are very seasonal with their feeding, and that rhythm is driven more by biology than by how warm or cool we keep them. His rabbits for the last year have been lovingly provided by a really cool local family homestead, and we’re super grateful for that partnership.
Judith has only been with us for about a year, but he’s already an awesome addition to Lizard Land. His whole “job” here is to help us talk about keeping giant snakes in captivity responsibly, their role as an invasive species in parts of the United States, and the fact that wild Burmese pythons are actually in decline in their native range. He’s a big snake with a big job! 🐍
🦃 Thanksgiving week hours: We’ll be closed on Thursday for the holiday, but open Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday as usual.
