Day 1: What is needlepoint? Needlepoint is the process of stitching over an open weave canvas. Traditional needlepoint canvases are stitch-painted, which means that every intersection (where the horizontal and vertical weave of the canvas meet) is painted a specific color, which is then stitched over using thread of the same color. This makes needlepoint a lot like paint-by-number, but with a needle and thread! Needlepoint designers spend a lot of time making sure that their designs are perfectly translated to that stitch-painted format. We’re very grateful, because it means that, as stitchers, we get to just enjoy the stitching process, since the design has already been laid out for us! Day 4: Picking your first project! With so many choices, it can be overwhelming to select your first project. The most important thing is to stitch something that you’re excited about, so that’s always a top priority! That being said, there are elements that can make a canvas more approachable as you’re getting started. 13 mesh canvases are easier to see than 18 mesh (if you missed yesterday’s video on mesh sizes, that’s a great reference!). Geometric designs that are 2 to 4 colors and canvases with straight lines or open background area provide a great straightforward area to get used to the rhythm of stitching before needing to navigate shading or irregular shapes. For your first canvas, we want to set you up for success as you work through the learning curve of needlepoint, but we also want you stitch something that you love. Whatever canvas you start on, we’re here to help you start stitching! Follow along for more Needlepoint Academy tips, tricks, and techniques throughout this 30-day series. Day 2: What you need to start stitching 🪡 Needlepoint can be intimidating when you’re getting started! With so many accessories and items available, it can be hard to separate the basics that you need to get started from optional add-ons. We’re here to help simplify things! The three things you need to get started are: a canvas, a needle, and threads to stitch with. The mesh size of the canvas (which we’ll talk about tomorrow!) determines what size needle and thread type you need. But really, those three things are all you need to start stitching! Once you’re ready to add accessories to your needlepoint lineup, the most useful are a small pair of portable scissors and a project bag to keep everything together. But you can absolutely start out by using scissors that you have at home and a Ziploc bag to keep your items organized! Other accessories like needleminders and stretcher bars are entirely optional, and you can always try them out down the road. There’s no pressure to get all the things all at once! Welcome to Needlepoint Academy by Third Coast Stitches 🪡 In this 30-day series, we will be covering all sorts of needlepoint topics to help you get started on your stitching journey! With needlepoint, there are often many ways to do the same thing, so this series is not meant to dictate the “one right way” to needlepoint. Rather, Needlepoint Academy will demonstrate options for how to approach certain parts of the stitching process. Needlepoint can be so much fun, but there is a bit of a learning curve as you’re getting started! Save these videos as reference for when you run into bumps along the road, so we can help you troubleshoot. We’re so excited for you, and grateful to have you as part of our needlepoint community! Let’s get stitching! See you tomorrow for Day 1 💙🧡 #NDLPTAcademybyTCS #ndlpt #needlepoint #beginnerneedlepoint #learntoneedlepoint

Needlepoint Newbies, this series is for you! Let’s unpack the beginner basics of needlepoint starting with the tent stitches. First things first: understanding the focus and orientation of your stitches. 1. Focus on the intersections of the canvas. 2. Of the four quadrants around the intersection, you’ll be using the upper right (Maine) and lower left (Texas). 3. These are in reference to the intersection you’re currently at so as you stitch, these reference points will move with you. Next we’ll cover all the tent stitches starting with the Half Cross stitch. Save this post for reference, tag a friend, and follow for more. #needlepointstitches #beginnerneedlepoint #needlepointnation

Day 5: Thread types 🧵 There are many types of thread to choose from in the needlepoint world. With different types of fiber, including cotton, silks, wools, silk/wool blends, and specialty fibers such as velvets and sparkly threads, there can almost be too many options when you’re getting started! When selecting threads for your canvas, first determine if you have a 13 mesh or an 18 mesh canvas, as this will determine which threads will work best with your canvas mesh. Then, think through whether you need a more durable fiber such as a cotton or wool for items that will see regular use, like key fobs or belts. For needlepoint ornaments or items that will be framed, less durable fibers such as pure silk can be used without worrying about durability. 13 mesh canvases work great with DMC 3 cotton or Silk & Ivory (a silk/wool blend). 18 mesh canvases work great with DMC 5 cotton, Pepper Pot silk, Essentials (a silk/wool blend), or Vineyard Silk. For any fiber that you’re working with, keeping hold of the tag that tells you which type and size of fiber you have, as well as the color number (and dye lot, if applicable!), is very helpful in case you’re running low and need more. Because dye lotted fibers have slight color variations from one dye lot to the next, it’s recommended to buy all of the skeins you’ll need for a project at the same time, checking to ensure they’re all the same dye lot. This will hopefully minimize dye lot related stress down the road! Our shop attendants are always happy to help you find the right threads for your project! Day 3: Needlepoint mesh sizes! Needlepoint canvas is made in different sizes, usually referred to as “mesh size.” There are lots of mesh sizes that exist, but the most common are 13 mesh and 18 mesh. With any mesh size, the number is a metric of how many stitches fit across an inch of the canvas. This means that smaller numbers correspond to larger mesh sizes. So 13 mesh is larger than 18 mesh, because there are fewer stitches per inch, so the stitches are set wider apart. It’s important to check the mesh size of the canvas that you’re planning to stitch, either in the product description online or by asking a shop attendant at your local needlepoint store, because the mesh size determines what size needle and fiber you need. The larger weave of 13 mesh canvases needs size 20 or 22 tapestry needles, and a thicker fiber such as DMC 3 cotton or Silk & Ivory to achieve full coverage across the canvas. The denser weave of 18 mesh canvases needs size 22 or 24 tapestry needles, and a thinner fiber such as DMC 5 cotton, Pepper Pot silk, or Essentials, to prevent excessive fuzzing when stitching. You’ll note that size 22 needles can be used on both mesh sizes, so if you’re going to purchase a pack, size 22 is the most versatile. Here at Third Coast Stitches, we’re happy to provide a free needle of the correct size with every canvas that you purchase!
