AQDiving Cabo Pulmo and the jackfish school was unreal — thousands of fish moving together and turning into a giant “cloud.” Cabo Pulmo is a protected marine park, so the reef is super alive and it’s one of the best places in Baja to see big bait balls and schooling behavior. The coolest part is how the whole group changes shape in seconds: tight ball, wide swirl, then back into a wall of fish — all to stay safer from predators and save energy while swimming.

Buceo en Cabo Pulmo y el cardumen de jureles fue una locura: miles de peces moviéndose juntos hasta formar una “nube” gigante. Cabo Pulmo es un parque marino protegido, por eso el arrecife está súper vivo y es de los mejores lugares en Baja para ver cardúmenes enormes y comportamiento de “bait ball”. Lo más impresionante es cómo cambian de forma en segundos: se compactan, se abren, giran y vuelven a juntarse — todo para protegerse mejor de depredadores y nadar de forma más eficiente.

The beauty of a sub adult African pompano (Alectis ciliaris)
The African pompano also known as the pennant-fish or threadfin trevally, is a widely distributed species of tropical marine fish in the jack family, Carangidae.
The young are much slenderer than the adults especially for the long filaments that start from the rays of the dorsal, anal and pelvic fins. Waving filaments similar to the urticant tentacles of the jellyfishes. When young, the serve to confuse the predators but later on they regress while growing and are totally absent in the adults because then, seen the size, they are now the predators.
This fish can reach the 175 cm with a weight of 20 kg.
The name of the genus Alectis, recalls Alecto from the Greek “Ἀληκτώ” (Alēktó) one of the three Erinyes of the Greek mythology then later resumed by the Romans: winged female figures who tortured the killers, especially those of the family environment, and then the wicked in general. Serpents in lieu of the hairs and having hard whim and burning embers to punish the guilty. A clear reference to the long filaments of the fins and to the greediness of this fish.
