No vídeo, Karim aparece em frente ao recinto dos elefantes e diz, de forma casual: "Aqui estou, na frente dos elefantes. A coisa mais legal deles é que eles têm trompas muito, muito longas. E isso é legal." Dezoito segundos de observação banal sobre a anatomia de elefantes — e então o vídeo termina.
Esse foi o primeiro vídeo publicado na história do YouTube.
Jawed Karim não era um usuário qualquer. Era um dos cofundadores da plataforma, que havia sido criada semanas antes junto com Chad Hurley e Steve Chen. O vídeo foi publicado como um teste simples para verificar se o sistema funcionava. Three PayPal veterans huddled in a garage in Menlo Park with one problem: they couldn’t share a dinner party video.
So they registered YouTube.com for $15.
April 23, 2005. Jawed stood at the San Diego Zoo. 19 seconds of awkward elephant footage. Nobody watched. But something was brewing.
While competitors charged fees and demanded software downloads, YouTube just worked. Upload. Share. Done.
By December 2005, they hit 8 million daily views. Then the bills arrived.
Bandwidth costs hit $1 million per month. Credit cards maxed. Chad mortgaged his house. Steve sold his car. Jawed moved back with his parents.
Then the lawyers came. Universal Music sued. Viacom demanded $1 billion. Steve once found 37 cease-and-desist letters on his desk in a single morning.
October 2006. Microsoft offered $1.3 billion. Yahoo flew them to a yacht. Google offered $1.65 billion.
They sat in Denny’s until 4 AM making the decision.
They took Google’s money.
The press called it history’s worst deal. Critics pointed to YouTube’s theoretical $200 billion value today.
What they missed: in October 2006, YouTube was 30 days from total bankruptcy. Bandwidth costs doubled every quarter. Copyright lawsuits totaled $3 billion. Revenue was zero.
They weren’t choosing between $1.65B and $455B. They were choosing between $1.65B and nothing.
Certainty beats possibility every time.
