JAEvery evening, as the light begins to fade, a quiet ritual unfolds high in the trees. 🌳
A chimpanzee carefully selects branches, bending and weaving them together to form a secure nest for the night. It’s a behavior passed down through generations, and perfected over time.
🎥 Captured here by JGI cinematographer Bill Wallauer, this moment reflects decades of close observation by the Jane Goodall Institute. Nest building offers a window into chimpanzee life, development, and even their intelligence.
In June 2025, that knowledge was applied in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. For the first time, JGI led a comprehensive chimpanzee census in this dense forest, covering 156 km across 39 transects. 📍
Using a method called line transect distance sampling, researchers didn’t need to rely on counting chimpanzees directly, they counted their nests. Because chimpanzees build a new nest each night, these structures become vital clues. By recording their location, distance, and recency scientists can estimate population size and better understand how chimpanzees are using the forest.
This is the power of long-term research. What began with careful observation in Gombe has grown into a foundation for science-based conservation in places like Bwindi. 🌱

TAJane Goodall was a giant, a warrior for the natural world. Her intelligence and empathy was her greatest weapon. I had the unexpected gift of meeting her a few years ago. Walking out of a hotel in Los Angeles I’d stayed a million times, I saw this unmistakable silhouette, a graceful and poignant figure, draped in her signature shawl. It was unexpected, and the feeling I had surpassed intellect. I felt in awe. Standing next to her awaiting our cars in the California sunshine I had the courage to introduce myself, and I simply said, Thank You. Thank you for your great commitment to making the world a better place with your life. She was genuine and engaged, she thanked me in return and elegantly got into the car. Her strength was on display, but it was masked in humility and simple determination to advocate for those who could not speak for themselves. A true hero. Other scientists once told Jane Goodall that animals didn’t have their own minds or feelings. But Jane had already learned better—from an unusual teacher. 🐾💚
