In this classic snippet from the Wall Street Journal, the "Pope of Trash" hits on a hilarious truth: rebellion used to have a uniform. From the grease of the beatniks to the safety pins of the punks, every major social upheaval came with a distinct silhouette.
Waters’ grievance isn't with the politics of the modern hacktivist—he actually seems to admire the audacity of shutting down a major corporation or a government from a bedroom. His real issue is the lack of showmanship. In his eyes, if you are going to dismantle the global financial system, you shouldn’t do it in a pair of stained sweatpants with bad posture. Where is the flair? Where is the "rebel look" that terrifies and confuses the older generation?
