Did we lose it? Pilates (originally called Contrology) was once a system of 34 mat exercises created by Joseph Pilates, performed in a specific order and in a specific way. His protégés carried on his legacy, continuing to teach and evolve the method. As Pilates gained popularity, the method evolved more and more. Eventually, contemporary Pilates was born. But somewhere along the way… we may have drifted too far from the original blueprint. Evolution is necessary. Evolution is beautiful. But too much of anything can dilute the source. Let’s continue to honour the harmony between the original blueprint and the evolution of the method without getting lost in the trends. Honouring the original 34. 1. The Hundred (seen in video) 2. Joseph Pilates (the inventor of Pilates!) actually called his method Contrology. @empilates.la in addition to being an amazing person and source of positivity, teaches in a way I really respect by staying true to the core tenants of the method. The number 1 rule being to “…always keep your mind wholly concentrated on the exercises as you perform them.” I work my muscles, but more importantly I work to strengthen the connection between my mind and body that supports my everyday life. ✨

A lot of people think the reformer was invented to make Pilates harder. But originally, it was actually designed to make Pilates more accessible. Joseph Pilates developed the reformer using springs attached to a bed frame while working with injured and unwell patients. Many of them couldn’t get down onto the floor to perform traditional mat exercises. The springs allowed movements to be supported or assisted, helping people build strength and mobility while lying down. That’s why the reformer is so effective for: • injury rehabilitation • beginners • people with limited mobility The springs can make exercises easier or harder, depending on how they’re used. So while reformer Pilates can definitely be challenging… its original purpose was actually to help people move when mat Pilates wasn’t possible. Joseph Pilates Teaching Breathing, Spread Eagle, and Pull Ups An incredible example of the “Traditional Ending” Sequence in Pilates, that we still teach and practice today. About Eve Gentry and this film: Eve Gentry was a modern dancer, one of the founders of the Dance Notation Bureau, and a student of Joe and Clara Pilates from the 1950s-60s. In 1955, Eve underwent a radical mastectomy, which left her unable to lift her arms. Typically, this would have meant an end to her dancing career. Due to her close work with Joe and Clara Pilates, Eve regained full range of motion in her arm and upper body. Eve’s husband, Bruce Gentry, filmed Joe teaching Eve on the equipment in his studio as part of the recovery and rehabilitation process, which is the footage you are viewing in this clip. Joe and Eve then presented it to a NYC hospital as evidence of the incredible ways Contrology could help people. The doctors didn’t believe it could be true. Bruce, Eve, and Joe then went back to the studio to film again. This time it was of Eve doing the same workout topless to prove that she really did have the recovery they claimed. Unfortunately however, the doctors were not interested because Joe didn’t hold any type of medical degree. Eve continued to work with Joe and Clara until 1965, when she and Bruce moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico. Once there, she opened her own dance and Pilates studio.
