KNWelcome to knitting 101: complete beginner
For the chunky hat project you will learn:
• how to cast on
• knit & purl stitches
• 1x1 ribbing
• stockinette
• decreasing stitches
• weaving in ends
• how to knit in the round
• how to use a magic loop
What you will need:
• one ball of chunky weight yarn (check the label which should tell you which needle size it recommends, choose one that says US 10-11 or 6mm-8mm). As this is your first project you don’t need to invest in “good” yarn. Choose one that suits your budget and preferences.
• one pair of US 11 or 8mm needles (I use Chiaogoo interchangeable needles but you can buy one pair with a long or short cord) if you choose a long cord you will need to use the magic loop method which will be explained in a video.
• check second hand craft stores, thrift shops, buy nothing groups etc as chunky needles and yarn are often available there! If you’re in Denver check out @recreativedenver
• a darning needle for weaving in ends
• a stitch marker (you can make this out of string if you don’t want to buy one)
I personally do not recommend straight needles, I haven’t used mine since I got them. Circular needles are very versatile and can be used for every project now and in the future.
