DRI wholeheartedly believe staring a family in medical school is not only possible, but should be encouraged. Schools, mentors, etc., should talk more about it and discuss what that may look like for students. The number of woman having to go through IVF after training, doing overnight call in their 3rd trimester, etc… it’s a lot. It’s not easy to be a parent either, but it offers so much more than it takes from you.
In medical school, you have very little responsibility comparatively, and the curriculum is somewhat flexible your 3/4 years. You may need to take an extra year to graduate, but that’s not uncommon! 40% of my class is “reclassified” meaning 40% is not graduating with their original class. Starting a family is not a set back, it’s a move forward. It also gives you a “why.”
If YOU are ready for children, medical school shouldn’t stop you. Taking the time off I did to have my baby and reconnect with myself was invaluable. I’m back and feel way more connected to my field than ever before.
Please DM me if you’re looking for mentorship on this topic 😊
