NUOops, I said the quiet part out loud.
If you’re LDS and you say you love your queer family and friends, I believe you.
But as a queer person, if you monetarily support the LDS Church or buy into the Proclamation’s BS, you’re no ally to me.
The Family: A Proclamation to the World may have some flowery language about how much families matter, yet in politics and, you know, actual reality, it seems to mainly drive families apart.
A little history:
The “prophetic” timing of the document couldn’t have been more “inspired” when it was released in 1995 during the much-publicized Baehr v. Miike marriage equality lawsuit in Hawaii. From then on, the Proclamation served as a foundational legal document (even filed to support their standing in court!) to ensure the church could continue to discriminate against same-sex couples should same-sex marriage be legalized at any point.
While Hawaii’s marriage equality effort ultimately failed, it was the first in a pattern of vicious institutional hatred against queer people that would continue with the support of Proposition 8 in California to which the LDS Church donated large sums of money, not to mention mobilized church members (so much for political neutrality).
Then in 2015 when gay marriage was legalized, 3 months later the church released the now infamous policy wherein couples in same-sex marriages were classified as apostates and their children were barred from baptism until age 18 when they could then “disavow” their parents marriage to join the church… (so much for eternal families).
Though that policy was reversed in 2019 (it was hugely unpopular! Wonder why!), the church has changed tact to more privately pernicious approaches such as supporting organizations like the World Congress of Families (which has been classified as a hate group) even while publicly declaring, “god loves all his children!”
This in addition to recent anti-trans legislation in Utah make it abundantly clear: the LDS Church isn’t backing down on its homophobia and considers LGBTQIA+ people a threat. Therefore, so do many members of the church.
. . . like the bishop who gave me an exorcism for being queer. Read more in my substack. 🔗
