(Alma 30:44) I just happened to come upon this story today while looking up the flowers that were at the red cliff temple. I happened to find this article and began reading and I’m so glad I finished to the end. Because when It told the story of the hawk at the end of the article and then looked up and saw the hawk on Moronis trumpet, was such an awe filled moment. It felt very sacred. I’ve been thinking about animals and God and how they point us to Christ. Their existence point to Him in so many ways. So seeing this beautiful red tailed hawk felt so special and divine and not coincidental. Most people never get to see what happens inside a temple of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, sometimes known as the Mormon Church. But today, I am in Syracuse Utah and they are letting anyone in. This temple just finished construction, and so before they close it off to the public forever, they are holding an open house to let anyone come and see what happens inside. And I feel like this is something everyone should experience because it is mind-blowing if you understand what it's trying to accomplish here. Like the high priest in ancient Israel, temples of the Church of Jesus Christ are working towards creating a kingdom of priests who can learn how to enter God's presence. Latter-day Saints participate in worship services where they learn about God's plan for His children and how if they strive to be disciples of Jesus Christ, they can one day return to the presence of God and become like kings and queens, priests and priestesses in His kingdom. Everything about the temple, its beauty, cleanliness, and sacred design, is meant to reflect our love and reverence for Him, not to glorify ourselves. In the Old Testament, God commanded His people to build temples that were incredibly beautiful and detailed, like Solomon’s Temple (1 Kings 6). The purpose wasn’t pride; it was to create a holy place where His presence could dwell and where sacred covenants could be made. We follow that same pattern today. I’ve been in LDS temples, and I can tell you, it’s not about showing off. Inside, it’s quiet, peaceful, and deeply spiritual. The feeling there isn’t about wealth or grandeur; it’s about being close to God and focusing on eternal things. The Church invests in building temples because they’re sacred spaces where members make eternal covenants and perform ordinances for themselves and others. They’re not built for tourists or status, they’re built to last for generations as places of worship. If it were about being “greater and grander,” we’d focus on publicity, but temples are actually closed to the public after dedication except for members in good standing. That alone shows the purpose isn’t worldly prestige.
