FOLeaf Cafe & Co is a new addition to the Broadbeach cafe scene. Part of a franchise group originating in Sydney, this is our first Leaf on the Gold Coast.
We arrive at the tail end of the morning coffee rush, eager to try their food and to find out what points of difference they offer from other cafes.
We ordered the Tempura Corn Fritters with smashed cucumber salad and the Big Breakfast. The Big Brekkie plate contained many ingredients you'd expect, set out simply around the plate - eggs your way, hash browns, sausage, bacon, avocado and toast - a generous serve to keep you going all morning.
The Tempura Corn Fritters were well presented as a stack of two hefty fritters with a poached egg on top. At first glance I could see that it was a heavier batter than tempura, 'heavy' extending to the fritters' composition as well. These were not the airy 'beat the egg whites separately and fold in' fritters that many chefs aspire to make. Instead, they are a franchise signature fritter made at a central location (hello, food miles) rather than on site, substantial enough that I only managed to eat one piece. The smashed cucumber salad too was not freshly made to order, the cucumbers having lost their crisp crunch.
A roastery (Sydney) as well as a cafe, we enjoyed both their coffee and drinks. Leaf's location under the Meriton is a good one to grab a coffee and go on your way through Broadbeach. Try it out.
Good Food Gold Coast dined by invitation.
