If you want to sing jazz you need to know how to use these three voice qualities! SOB - the most common and traditional quality used in jazz. Examples are: Ella, Samara Joy, Laufey , Bing Crosby, and many others. How to create it: imagine you want to cry quietly but have to sing instead. Anatomy of Sob is tilting our thyroid cartilage that gives us all this space and sobbing sound. TWANG - also common quality in jazz. Examples are: Ray Charles, Billie Holiday, Renee Olstead and Caity Gyorgy. How to create it: think the voice of a witch, robot or sound of a cat meowing. Anatomy of Twang is narrowing our epiglottis at the entrance of the throat that gives us the narrow but very projected controlled sound. SPEECH - jazz wouldn’t exist without it. Examples are: Frank Sinatra, Nikki Yanofsky, Diana Krall, Nancy Wilson. How to create it: just use you very regular speaking voice, try to tell a story with it like you normally would. Keep it as close to speaking as possible. Anatomy of it is using thick vocal folds or, in other words, full mass of our vocal folds without narrowing epiglottis or tilting thyroid cartilage.
