UN📍 Bhadra Tiger Reserve, Karnataka
A rare and stunning wildlife moment has emerged from Bhadra Tiger Reserve where a normal-coloured leopard mother was seen with two cubs — one melanistic (black) and one normal-spotted cub.
The dark coat appears due to Melanism, a genetic condition caused by excess production of melanin pigment. Interestingly, melanistic leopards still have rosette patterns, but they are hidden under the dark pigmentation.
Wildlife experts explain that if both parents carry the recessive melanism gene, each cub has approximately a 25% probability of being melanistic. Such sightings are rare and highlight the genetic diversity present in India’s wild leopard population.
