One of the simplest ways to achieve a cinematic image with strong contrast is to stack all your sources on the same side. Key, fill, kicker, practical — all coming from one direction. Rather than placing a fill opposite the key to "balance" the image, a same-side fill preserves the contrast while still controlling shadow detail. It's not a new idea. Roger Deakins' cove lighting works on a similar principle — a large, soft source motivated by the practicals in frame, wrapping from one side rather than fighting itself from two. Here we're loosely replicating that with three individual lights at varying strengths, imitating that stronger backlight gradually wrapping around to the front. #lighting #lightingsetup #cinematography #filmmakingtips
