Even all the big brands increasingly ‘favour’ garments Made in Bangladesh. And the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and German development cooperation agency GIZ are partnering. Some clothing companies based largely in Bangladesh include Tommy Hilfiger, Gap, Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, Giorgio Armani, and H&M. High demand for these brands in the US and Europe are increasing pressure on Bangladeshi laborers to produce more efficiently. The "Dead" Rivers of Bangladesh The Buriganga, along with the Turag and Shitalakshya rivers, has suffered catastrophic damage due to the rapid growth of the garment industry (Fast Fashion). Toxic Discharge: It is estimated that around 21,000 cubic meters of toxic waste are released into the Buriganga every single day by tanneries and textile factories. Chemical Cocktail: The water contains high levels of chromium, lead, cadmium, and mercury. These heavy metals are used in dyeing and leather processing and are highly carcinogenic. Deoxygenation: The chemical load is so high that the dissolved oxygen levels are near zero. This means the river is "biologically dead"—no fish or plants can survive in it. Impact on Human Life and Wildlife The term "life-threatening" is accurate for several reasons: Public Health Crisis: Millions of people living on the banks of these rivers suffer from chronic skin diseases, respiratory issues, and gastric problems.
