Following my esophagram which showed markedly decreased esophageal motility, my doctor with @austingastrotx wanted me to redo the esophageal manometry test I had done last January and had gotten a fairly normal result. So this will show what progression I’ve had over 10 months. I hate this test. It’s my least favorite I think of all the tests. Way worse than an EMG. My last results looked a lot more red to me which means higher pressure. I’m interested in what they find. #MedicalMystery #MyALSJourney

FIOne skill we make sure to teach at 1st Step Healthcare Training is how to take a manual blood pressure. I’ve come across so many nursing assistants and nurses that don’t know how and it’s a huge disadvantage not knowing how to do it. Blood pressure machine are not always accurate!
1. Apply the cuff, make sure it’s tight.
2. Place your stethoscope on the brachial artery located on your inner arm near your elbow.
3. Inflate the cuff to 160.
4. Slowly release the knob to allow the air to come out.
5. Listen for the first thump, note the number you heard it. (this is your systolic). the top number.
6. Listen for the last thump, note the number you heard it at (this is your diastolic). Bottom number.
7. Release all the air by turning the knob counter clockwise.

DRHave you considered a midlife MOT blood test?
I usually book myself in for a full set of blood tests, usually before my birthday. I have a family history of dementia, type 2 diabetes, obesity and heart disease. So I’ve decided to have a proactive approach to my health rather than waiting for something to happen.
I think ideally all women in midlife should try and do the same. I know having worked in the NHS for 25years it’s not something that your NHS GP will necessarily do. But there are a lot of companies out there who can offer these tests at a reasonable cost. And I will often advise my patients to do these annually too and tailor to their family history and needs.
Why? Because tests like:
✨ Thyroid function (TSH, T3, T4)
✨ Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, folic acid
✨ Liver function, fasting glucose & insulin
✨ Full blood count, ferritin & iron
✨ CRP (inflammation)
✨ Hormones (FSH, oestradiol, testosterone)
✨ Lipid profile (cholesterol, LDL, HDL)
…can give you valuable insight into your health, energy, and hormones, as well as highlight risks for insulin resistance, cholesterol, dementia, and diabetes.
