EXGiganotosaurus and Mapusaurus were closely related carcharodontosaurid theropods that lived during the early Late Cretaceous in what is now Argentina, though Mapusaurus appeared slightly later. Giganotosaurus, reaching an estimated 12–13 meters (39–43 feet) long, was among the largest known theropods.
Mapusaurus was slightly smaller but may have been a social species, as fossil evidence suggests multiple individuals were found together. Both are thought to have hunted sauropods, possibly including juvenile or weakened Argentinosaurus, though direct evidence is lacking.
With serrated teeth adapted for slicing flesh, they may have used ambush tactics or opportunistic hunting strategies, though whether Mapusaurus actively hunted in groups remains debated.
