BIThis is the molecular structure of plasma membrane.
It is a quiet guardian, protecting the cell while letting in what it needs..
The plasma membrane, also known as the cell membrane, is a critical component of all living cells, providing a barrier that separates the interior of the cell from its external environment. This semi-permeable membrane is primarily composed of a lipid bilayer, which includes phospholipids arranged in a double layer. These phospholipids have hydrophilic (water-attracting) heads(in blue) and hydrophobic (water-repelling) tails(in golden color) , creating a barrier that is fluid and dynamic.
Embedded within this lipid bilayer are various proteins(in purple )that serve several functions: some act as channels or transporters facilitating the movement of substances in and out of the cell, others serve as receptors for signal transduction, and some provide structural support. Additionally, carbohydrates attached to proteins (glycoproteins) and lipids (glycolipids-in green) on the extracellular surface contribute to cell recognition and communication.
The fluid mosaic model describes this structure, highlighting the flexible nature of the membrane and the mosaic-like distribution of proteins. Cholesterol molecules interspersed within the lipid bilayer add rigidity and stability while maintaining membrane fluidity. Overall, the plasma membrane is essential for maintaining homeostasis, enabling communication, and allowing selective permeability to sustain cellular functions.
