NAWhat happens when your parent runs out of money in assisted living?
Most assisted living communities are private pay only, which means they don’t accept Medicaid.
So when the money runs out, your parent may need to find another place to live.
And this? It’s one of the most stressful situations families face. Most aren’t ready for it.
Here’s what to do before it becomes a crisis:
🔹 Stay in communication: Ask the assisted living community what their process is as families spend down and what your options are.
🔹 Map out the timeline: Figure out how long current funds will last - now, not later. Share this with the community, and make a plan.
🔹 Understand what Medicaid covers: In most states, it doesn’t cover assisted living, but it does pay for nursing home care - if your parent qualifies and applies in time.
🔹 Plan the move strategically: Some nursing homes won’t accept new residents on Medicaid - but may say yes if there’s private pay to start.
🔹Start the application process early: Medicaid is not automatic. There’s an application, eligibility rules, and a five-year look back. If you are over the income to qualify, some states have programs that allow you to still access the benefit. Waiting can limit your options.
