HACannizzaro’s reaction is an important organic chemistry reaction in which aldehydes that do not have an alpha hydrogen undergo self-oxidation and reduction in the presence of a strong base (like NaOH or KOH).
In this reaction, one aldehyde molecule is oxidized to a carboxylic acid, while another is reduced to an alcohol.
A classic example is benzaldehyde, which forms benzoic acid and benzyl alcohol.
A perfect example of how one compound can play two opposite roles at the same time!
