SEFire Corals 🔥🪸 The surprising ally for restoration
Our Curaçao team discovered that fire corals can enhance coral restoration outcomes in some surprising ways.
During the conditioning phase—when substrates are placed in the ocean to develop beneficial algae and microorganisms that help coral larvae settle—our team found that placing them inside the fire coral blades encouraged the growth of beneficial biofilms while reducing harmful algae.
They also found that outplanting Seeding Units with baby corals inside the fire coral blades was beneficial for four coral species. The fire coral structure creates shade that keeps algae growth in check and reduces wave energy, helping the coral babies stay put. Data shows that the chances of survival for young corals growing within fire coral blades increase by up to fourfold.
