Have you ever been to Moab’s Potash Road where you drive alongside towering red rock cliffs?! This scenic drive is a hidden gem that winds through stunning desert landscapes and ancient petroglyphs etched into stone. Known for its breathtaking views of the Colorado River and its access to iconic hiking and climbing spots, Potash Road is a must-see for adventurers and nature lovers alike.

ADWould you drive your van down the craziest road in a national park?
📍Shafer Trail, Utah
The Shafer Trail connects the Island in the Sky District of Canyonlands National Park to Potash Road and descends 1,500’ over some very steep and tight switchbacks.
We can’t recommend driving this trail enough, but there are a few things to know:
* The road starts in Canyonlands National Park, so make sure that you have your America the Beautiful pass or pay the daily entrance fee.
* We recommend driving from the top (from Canyonlands) down to Moab. That way, you’ll get the best views of the road before you descend. If you drive it from the bottom up, you won’t really see the road till you’re at the top.
* High-clearance 4x4 is recommended for this unpaved road, especially after it rains.
* The road is open year-round, but we would personally avoid it if it was wet or covered in snow.
* It is VERY narrow in some sections. We drove it on a weekday early in the morning, and didn’t see anyone till we got closer to Moab. The earlier you can get on the trail, the less traffic.
* The whole adventure is about 40 miles and will take 2-3 hours from the top all the way down into Moab.
Save this for your next trip to Moab!

This has been something we have wanted to try for years!!! Every time we go to Moab, we see so many Can-Ams having so much fun, and I am so stoked we finally got to try it! This is one of the many reasons so many people visit Moab every year, and it’s so cool to be able to try it without owning these vehicles!
We used @brp_experiences to book this tour. @brp_experiences is a booking platform for Can-Am, Sea-Doo and Ski-Doo adventures all over the world!! I highly recommend browsing their website for the next destination you’re planning to see what cool tours you can book locally!
We booked the Fins & Things and Hell’s Revenge Sunset tour with @highpointhummer and our guide Ethan was amazing! He guided us through everything, from teaching us about the vehicle, how to go over obstacles, and he took us to the best locally known spots away from the crowds.
This was something I recommend to anyone visiting the area, especially if you or your partner needs some extra adrenaline!

AD🌈 What ARE these neon-color ponds in the Utah desert?!
Moab is full of surprises… but the Potash Evaporation Ponds might be the wildest, most colorful sight you’ll ever see here. From above, they look completely unreal — but they’re 100% real and just minutes from Arches National Park.
📍 Where They Are
The ponds sit along Potash Road (UT-279), about 45 minutes from downtown Moab. They’re on private land, but you can see them perfectly from public viewpoints.
🚗 How to See Them
Potash Road Drive:
• From Moab, take US-191 → turn onto UT-279
• Drive ~13 miles
• Pull off at viewpoints for the best angles
Dead Horse Point State Park:
• One of the best overlooks from above
• $20 entry, epic views at sunset
Helicopter/air tours:
• Brightest, most vibrant views
💡 What Are They?
Shallow evaporation ponds used for potash mining. The bright blue dye speeds up evaporation and makes the ponds pop against the red desert.

This is inside of Canyonlands National Park📍
Canyonlands is easily one of the most underrated parks in the U.S. 🏜️
With Arches National Park being just a short distance away this one often gets overlooked. Even if you only have a short amount of time… viewpoints like this make it so worth a quick stop 🚗
While there’s no hiking required to get to the main viewing platform… there is a short walk to get to this exact spot you see here. When you are at the main viewpoint… just look off to your right and you will see the trail (down a few steps) that will lead you here 🥾
Remember to always leave no trace! Pack out what you bring in and always try to leave it better than you found it 🚮
