Born in 1925 in Havana, Cuba, Celia Cruz left her birth country in 1960. Already performing and making her name with La Sonora Matancera, Celia Cruz became one of the most highly regarded singers in the world. Celia had a special connection with the city of Miami and the Freedom Tower. As an outspoken advocate for Cuban liberation, Cruz understood that for an ever-growing exile community, this American city could nurture hope and offer legitimate refuge for the hundreds of thousands of Cubans fleeing socio-political turmoil. Places like the Cuban Refugee Center, operating at the Freedom Tower from 1962 to 1974, offered vital services including financial assistance, medical and dental care, and English learning courses. Featuring video footage, posters, wigs and dresses, Celia Cruz: Work recognizes Cruz’s labor and her tireless commitment to her audiences who she loved to make “dance until dawn.” In 2025, we honor Cruz as well as the centennial of Hialeah and the Freedom Tower. In doing so, we celebrate our collective history and an extraordinary performer whose music plays a pivotal role in the soundtrack of Miami, the Caribbean, and globally. I spent an inspiring afternoon with art friends at the Museum of the African Diaspora for an important artist talk that reminded me why dialogue around Black art matters so deeply right now. Hearing Derrick Adams (whose work I’m proud to have in my collection), in conversation with brilliant curator Cornelia Stokes, was both grounding and expansive. Derrick spoke candidly about joy as resistance, about the discipline behind play, and about building images that hold space for Black interiority without explanation or apology. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 Cornelia guided the conversation with such care and rigor, drawing out insights about materiality, audience, market forces, and responsibility. It was a reminder that collecting is not just acquisition; it’s stewardship. It’s a belief. And, it’s long-term engagement with an artist’s vision!
