NZThe funeral for a prominent Mongrel Mob member in Tauranga was met with a heavy police presence, including Armed Offenders Squad and the police helicopter monitoring the event.
The funeral is understood to be the first significant test under the new gang patch legislation.
One gang member who was arrested at the tangi says police are coming down "stupidly" on gangs.
Roka Dog told Stuff he thought police were disrespectful at the tangi.
"We got arrested at a tangi, on a day of death. Family and kids all around mourning for our dead," Dog told Stuff.
"It was disrespectful that is how I felt."
He said after the arrest he was not to associate with other gang members and was not allowed to go back to the tangi

RNA Mongrel Mob member has gone from living in his car to running a flourishing rēwana bread business - and it's taking off on social media.
His mother died in 2020, he was left homeless in 2021. He and his family were hungry, and it led to a turning point.
He works with a four-year-old fermented kūmara starter, called a bug, which comes from his aunty's 40-year-old supply. The Christmas period is proving to be a busy time for him with 35 orders last week, which he makes from his home.

In his head, it’s not silence, it’s spectacle. Today he’s crooning in Spanish for a passing couple hunting for cheese, tomorrow he’ll switch to Italian for some lost wanderer asking directions, and by next week he’s probably fluent in whatever language arrives at the gate. A polyglot of joy, powered entirely by belly rubs and blind devotion to the moment.
Born into the stubborn cadence of rural Romania, where mornings are announced by roosters and evenings settle into woodsmoke and murmured stories, dogs like him were engineered for harder things. The great Romanian shepherd breeds, thick-boned and unflinching, were trusted to stare down wolves and bears along the spine of the Carpathians, to guard without instruction, to endure without complaint. But life in the village yard teaches a parallel curriculum. The scrape of boots, the gossip of neighbors, the unspoken truth that rolling over at the right time can disarm even the sternest human. Survival, yes. But also strategy. Charm, deployed with surgical precision.
He hasn’t seen winters carve their authority into the land yet, hasn’t stood watch under a sky heavy with threat, hasn’t learned the weight of the role waiting for him. Right now, the world is smaller, softer, a universe contained between the fence, the gate, and the next pair of hands willing to indulge him. Every belly rub is a revelation, every stranger a new language to sing in, every moment an unrepeatable miracle he greets with reckless abandon. So why do we wait to feel things fully?
