NOEssential steps to craft motion and color from above! With @sam_up_high / “For me, a powerful drone clip starts by dialing in the camera settings in full manual mode to establish a solid foundation for editing.
1) This clip was shot in 4K resolution, in true vertical format (9:16), at 60 frames per second, with an ISO of 100, a shutter speed of 1/120, and using the D-Cinelike profile.
Since I planned to export the final edit at 30 fps for Instagram, recording at 60 fps gave me the option to slow the footage. In this case, reducing the speed to 80% helped create smoother motion in the waterfall.
ISO 100 is the base ISO of my drone’s sensor. This ISO creates the cleanest image with minimal noise in the shadows.
For shutter speed, I follow the 180° shutter rule to achieve natural motion blur—at 60 fps, that means a shutter speed of 1/120.
2) D-Cinelike provides 10-bit color depth and increased dynamic range compared to the standard profile, preserving more detail in both highlights and shadows while delivering smoother color transitions.
3) To objectively assess exposure, I rely on the histogram, and ND filters are essential for controlling incoming light and positioning the histogram correctly. This is especially important in snowy environments.
4) After importing the footage, I work through a structured node setup on DaVinci Resolve.
5) I add contrast using a subtle S-curve while monitoring the waveform, followed by a small global saturation boost if needed.
6) I then refine the white balance using temperature and tint controls, counteracting the excessive blue cast common in snowy scenes.
7) Using the Color Warper and HSL curves, I mute blue tones and enhance oranges to bring out sunset reflections. I further separate colors by warming the highlights and cooling the shadows for a balanced, complementary look.
8) Power windows help guide attention, recover sky detail, enhance the waterfall, and subtly darken the frame edges for a natural vignette.
9) The video was exported in 4K, 30 fps, H.265 at 50,000 kb/s, then finalized in HD via the Edits app to minimize Instagram compression.”
