EPQ: If I got the smallpox vaccine as a child, am I still protected against Monkeypox today?
.
I get this question a lot and I wrote a short blog article about it last night (so check that out for more detail and links to sources at the link in my bio).
A: Basically we know that the smallpox vaccine protects against smallpox and monkeypox at 85% for about 3 to 5 years and then protection against infection would wane. So it is doubtful that your smallpox vaccine would protect you against infection with monkeypox now. We believe it would still protect somewhat against severe disease.
