Chairman Roykupar Synrem said the Bill is crucial amid rising tensions in Bangladesh, growing extremism and repeated arrests of suspected illegal immigrants. He said if the Centre cannot grant ILP due to Meghalaya’s transit-state status, it must at least approve the MRSSA Amendment Bill—already passed by the Assembly and awaiting the Governor’s assent—as it offers ILP-like protections. Synrem also flagged concerns over suspected illegal settlements in Lum Survey, unregulated labour movement and the risk of people excluded from SIR exercises in neighbouring states entering Meghalaya. The checks continued on Tuesday at the JN Stadium in Polo and in several locations in Nongthymmai. According to KSU, about 191 labourers were found without proper and valid documents. Consequently, the KSU halted their work and instructed the labourers to pack up their belongings and leave. Reports indicate that during the check at the JN Stadium, some workers were allegedly assaulted. Sonu, a technician from Delhi, recounted his experience, stating that all labourers were asked to stand in a queue. While in line, he was assaulted by KSU members, resulting in a chipped tooth. Sonu, who operates a track machine, expressed his intention to abandon the work and return as directed by his company, citing the threat to workers’ safety. Deputy Chief Minister on Tuesday clarified the state's position on the implementation of the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MR — ST BYTES Deputy Chief Minister on Tuesday clarified the state’s position on the implementation of the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA), 2016. He stated that the Act is very much in force and that district-level task forces, headed by the respective Deputy Commissioners, have already been activated across the state. He informed that efforts are underway to further strengthen the implementation mechanism in all districts, with special emphasis on Shillong, where the system, he said, is fully functional. Addressing concerns and criticisms surrounding the MRSSA, Tynsong explained that while the 2016 Act is being implemented, a key limitation existed in the original principal legislation. “There was no provision in the original Act for setting up entry and exit points, which prevented its full implementation,” he said. According to the Deputy CM, this shortcoming prompted the state government to introduce and pass an amendment bill in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly to address the issue. However, he added that the amendment bill was subsequently referred by the then Governor to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) for consideration.
