GEBlue eyes are not an ancient human trait. Thousands of years ago, every human had brown eyes, the original color shaped by melanin in the iris. Then a single genetic mutation changed everything. A variation in the HERC2 gene reduced melanin production, creating what we now see as blue eyes — not from blue pigment, but from the way light scatters through the iris. Today, hundreds of millions of people share that same mutation, tracing back to one common ancestor.
