These red flags weren't mentioned by the big sleep-training accounts when my first baby was super hard to settle, a chronic cat-napper, and very restless sleeper. The focus was only on: "don't create bad habits" "baby needs to self-soothe" "don't nurse to sleep" "drowsy but awake" "they need their own sleep space" Swaddle and pacifiers UGH. 💀💀 Besides the fact that biologically normal infant sleep is not any of those things... ✅️Babies are biologically wired to wake at night. ❌️But, if baby is very hard to settle to sleep, or is waking every 30 minutes to every hour CHRONICALLY, there is likely a deeper reason. 🚩Here are the total RED FLAGS that I should've been told to check for if my baby wasn't sleeping well: 1. Body tension - Is baby tight? If they feel restricted it their own body, of course they won't feel comfortable and safe to fall asleep. 2. Reflux - visible spit up or not, reflux will come up as soon as they are layed down and make it near impossible to lay them down flat without waking them up. Sleeping on an incline doesn't help either. 3. Nervous-system dysregulation - If baby has 1 and 2 going on, or if they had a traumatic birth experience, their nervous-system is likely dysregulated from all the pain and discomfort. Who can sleep when they're in fight or flight?? 4. Mouth breathing - Sleep apnea is linked to mouth breathing. And in my personal experience, my daughter was a very light sleeper until she started getting her tongue up and lips closed while sleeping. The promotion of pacifier use in the sleep training industry to help baby "self-soothe" is just making things worse in my opinion. When the pacifier falls out, baby wakes up because they're left with their mouth hanging open and sucking on the pacifier stimulates that vagus nerve where the tongue is supposed to be. These things aren't talked about enough and so many moms aren't aware of genuine red flags that may be the reason their baby doesn't sleep. *not professional or medical advice* #baby #sleep #infantsleep #mom #newborn
