NASA’s Artemis II mission lifted off successfully Wednesday, sending four astronauts on the first crewed journey around the Moon in more than 50 years. The Space Launch System rocket carrying the Orion spacecraft blasted off from Launch Complex 39B at 6:35 p.m. ET. Aboard were NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, commander; Victor Glover, pilot; and Christina Koch, along with Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen. The approximately 10-day mission will test deep-space systems ahead of future lunar landings. It builds on the uncrewed Artemis I flight in 2022 and advances NASA’s goal of sustained human presence on the Moon and eventual Mars exploration.

NASA has launched four astronauts on a mission to circle the Moon, marking the first human journey back to deep space in 54 years, and the farthest distance from Earth humans will have ever traveled to date. The four astronauts on this Artemis II mission will travel 600,000 miles around the moon. During their 10-day trip, they’ll test life support systems in the Orion capsule for future crewed missions to the moon’s surface. A moon landing would occur during Artemis III, which is currently targeted to launch sometime in 2027
