NADid you know that your physical features or your gene expression is determined by region? For example, if you’re ancestors come from a place in the north, their genes may have adapted to have lighter skin and lighter eyes due to less sunlight or less uv exposure and if they came from near the equator they would have darker hair and eyes with denser curlier hair. For the native people of the Americas we see a wide expression of genes since native people come from the top of Greenland to the bottom of South America. It would be impossible given the differnt weather, UV exposures, and overall environments for us to all have the same look.
It’s a common misconception that Native American and indigenous people all should look one way or that the way we were described by Columbus was the only accurate description. When we put such strict stereotypes on ourselves without our communities we are hurting ourselves from the inside out. We are validating those outside our communities and not taking into consideration how migration has effected us historically and ancestrally.
Many modern natives have also mixed genes from both mixing with other natives as well as other ethnicities. So there is a lot of diversity when it comes to what a Native American indigenous people would look like.

DATwo Indigenous sisters opened up their own thrift shop in Fort Worth this year, located on a road with a traumatic history for local Native Americans.
@dancingheart_iglesias makes sure customers feel welcome at her new business, @flipstone_vat Vintage and Thrift, which is tucked off a busy road. Many of the people shopping for the eco-friendly finds may not be aware of an unusual fact.
"We knew that it was ironic that we were a Native-owned business on White Settlement Road," Iglesias said.
Iglesias is a member of the Lakota tribe.
"My mom didn't have those opportunities. I think for her life, she was just surviving. She was in boarding school, and her life was extremely traumatic," Iglesias said.
Iglesias is taking advantage of the opportunities her mother didn't have and co-owners the business with her sister, @lilymekeel. The two were born and raised in Tarrant County.
The sisters' dream of starting their business on a road with a painful history can help them and Tarrant County's Indigenous people heal from the past while forging a new path for the future.
