SO🦠 Phytoplankton are microscopic algae that provide food for many ocean species. However, when some grow in large numbers they can produce toxic ☣️ compounds that have harmful effects on habitats and humans alike.
We participate in regular phytoplankton surveys with @noaa South Carolina Phytoplankton Monitoring Network 🤝 to help identify the species that inhabit our waters and monitor harmful algal blooms in our region. We then report our findings to the NOAA Marine Biotoxin Program for further research. 🔬
These are just a few of the incredible species we find right here in the Charleston Harbor! 🌊
