Bu durumun sebebi pil ile LED arasındaki mesafe kısaldıkça, tıpkı iletken teller ile kurulan elektrik devrelerinde olduğu gibi, direncin azalmasıdır. Kurşun kalemin yazı yazmak için kullanılan kısmı genellikle grafitten üretilir. Grafit ısıyı ve elektriği iyi iletir. Bu yüzden elektrot olarak da kullanılır.
