TROganesson, element 118, is a synthetic noble gas created in 2002 by Russian and American scientists at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research. Named after physicist Yuri Oganessian, it has a fleeting nature with a very short half-life, measured in milliseconds, making its observation and study challenging. Synthesized by bombarding californium-249 with calcium-48 ions, oganesson is the heaviest element currently recognized, belonging to the seventh period of the periodic table.
Its extreme instability precludes practical applications, but its significance lies in advancing our understanding of nuclear physics and pushing the limits of the periodic table. The production process involves intricate and costly experimental setups, contributing to its status as one of the most challenging elements to synthesize and study.
