Meet the Okapi - an elusive, shy mammal endemic to the rainforests of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. These are really remarkable creatures - 4 chambered stomachs, foot-long tongues they use to clean their eyeballs, and Zebra-like stripes on their legs! In this video I talk about what makes the Okapi so special and why it is sadly endangered. Poaching and deforestation due to mining in the Congo are the leading reasons for the species’ decline and also are responsible for countless human rights violations. And surprise to absolutely noone, the money behind these illegal operations can often be linked to rich nations and powerful corporations. It’s critical that we recognize how the same systems that destroy people’s lives also destroy wildlife.
