REOnida (MIRC Electronics Ltd) is an Indian consumer electronics company founded in 1981.
1. Brand Identity & Advertising
Onida’s slogan “Neighbour’s Envy, Owner’s Pride” was a core part of its identity in the 90s.
The iconic “Onida Devil” (a character with horns, green or eerie look) was central to their ad campaigns. He became very memorable — some kids even found him scary!
These ads were bold and attention grabbing — they didn’t try to be subtle. That helped Onida stand out in a crowded market.
2. Products / Technology
Onida in the 90s mostly sold CRT (cathode ray tube) TVs — both colour and black & white.
They were known for fairly good build quality for the price, loud speakers (“bass blaster” etc), good sound output. Folks still recall their Onida CRTs working long with minimal issues.
They also had aesthetics that stood out: for example colour TVs with speakers placed unusually (below picture tube) — something that made them look sleek for the time.
3. Market Position
Onida was among the leading TV brands in India in the 80s & 90s, alongside BPL, Videocon, etc. For many, owning an Onida TV was aspirational.
They were perceived as premium-ish compared to basic local sets, but still more affordable than some imported or higher-end foreign brands. So they hit a “sweet spot” for many middle-class Indian households.
💭 Nostalgia & Legacy
Many people still remember the “devil” ad very vividly — both the fear (as a child) and the fascination.
The slogan and the mascot are often used today when people talk about 90s nostalgia.
Stories of Onida CRTs still working decades later, being passed down or heard about — good memories of durability.
