We introduced an open cup from the start when Maddie began drinking water, and it’s much easier than most people think.
Open cups support a mature swallow and proper tongue and lip movement, unlike sippy cups, which encourage an immature swallow.
Open cup drinking also promotes strong lip closure, which is the movement we need to produce the m, p, and b sounds and facilitates appropriate tongue elevation for the t and d sounds.

JAOkay moms… I have to share this because it’s been SUCH a game changer for us! 🙌 My toddler has been using the @reflosmartcup and it honestly blows me away how much it’s helped. 💕
She’s learning to drink from a real cup (no sippy!) and the insert slows the flow just enough so she doesn’t end up soaked every time. It’s not spill-proof, but it totally helps control the mess… and makes her feel like such a big kid. 🥹
I love that it’s super simple, made from safe BPA-free plastic, and even made in the USA. The “grown-up” style makes her so proud to use it, just like mom and dad. 🥤✨

Using a puree, whether premade or an at-home smoothie, is a great way to practice open cup drinking!
The slower flow helps a child manage the liquid a little easier while figuring out the gross, fine, and oral motor plans for open cup drinking!
Of course, we want to still give opportunities to practice with thin liquids, but this can be great way to introduce open cup drinking AND continue to practice (especially for those very independent little ones).
Also, you don’t need to make it complicated or purchase an expensive open cup to do so! Here are some of my favorite open cup options:
-Straight from the applesauce container
-Shot glasses you may have lying around
-Mini paper cups (these are nice too because you can cut out the nose area to make it easier to tip back!)
-Mini silicone open cups (again, don’t need an expensive one - I have one listed in my Amazon storefront that is 2 for $6!)
