Exploring the color palette behind the eucalyptus leaves. Before painting the final studies, I spent time mixing different pigments to understand how these subtle greens could emerge on the paper. For this series I worked mainly with Yellow Ochre, Viridian, Violet Lake and Grenadine, creating variations and softening their intensity through dilution and layering. Eucalyptus rarely appears as a single green. Its color moves between muted greens, greyish tones and cool bluish nuances, and watercolor is perfect for capturing those gentle shifts. These small mixing studies help me understand how the pigments interact before they find their place in the final leaves. ----------‐------------------------------------------------------------ Exploring the color palette behind the eucalyptus leaves. Did you know? Sap Green was originally made from buckthorn berries, but it was so unstable that the colour would fade over time. That’s why modern Sap Green is now a blend of pigments, designed to be much more lightfast and reliable. Did you know? Permanent Alizarin Crimson was developed as a more lightfast, reliable version of the original pigment, keeping that same deep, rich tone without the risk of fading. The traditional Alizarin Crimson, derived from the madder root, was used for centuries in painting and even as a textile dye. Even today, you can still find the original version in some art stores. #watercolortips #alizarincrimson #learnwatercolor #colormixing #watercolorartist

For centuries, ultramarine was made from lapis lazuli. It was rare, expensive, and often reserved for the most important parts of a painting. In 1824, France offered a prize to anyone who could create a synthetic version. Two chemists, Jean-Baptiste Guimet and Christian Gmelin, solved it independently, at almost the same time. One discovery. Two minds. And suddenly, a colour once worth more than gold became something artists could actually use. #FrenchUltramarine #PigmentHistory #PB29 #ArtHistory #Watercolour

Reading a watercolor tube is a bit like decoding a secret language. Manufacturers pack a ton of data onto those tiny labels to help you predict how the paint will behave on paper. Here is your guide to mastering the “fine print” of your palette. 🎨 The Anatomy of a Watercolor Label 1. The Pigment Name & Index While “Midnight Blue” sounds poetic, the Pigment Index Number tells the real story. It usually looks like a code (e.g., PB28). • P = Pigment • B = Color Category (Blue) • 28 = The specific chemical identity. PW- Pigment White PY- Pigment Yellow PG- Pigment Green PO- Pigment Orange PB- Pigment blue PR- Pigment Red PBr- Pigment Brown PBk- Pigment Black PV- Pigment Violet PM- Pigment Metal Why it matters: If you buy “Sap Green” from three different brands, they might all use different pigment blends. Checking the code ensures you’re getting the specific hue you want. 2. Lightfastness (The “Forever” Factor) This rating tells you how resistant the paint is to fading when exposed to light. • I or *** or AA: Excellent/Permanent. • II or ** or A: Very Good. • III or * or B: Fair/Fugitive (Avoid these for professional work). 3. Transparency vs. Opacity Watercolor is prized for its glow, but some minerals are naturally more “chalky.” • Empty Square (□): Transparent. Light hits the paper and bounces back through the paint. • Square with a slash (◩): Semi-transparent. • Filled Square (■): Opaque. Great for highlights or gouache-like effects, but can get “muddy” if over-mixed. 4. Staining Properties This tells you how much the pigment “bonds” to the paper fibers. • Staining: Hard to lift or erase once dry. • Non-staining: Sits on the surface; you can easily “scrub” it off with a wet brush to fix mistakes. 5. Series Number This isn’t about quality—it’s about cost. • Series 1 usually contains earth tones or synthetic pigments (cheaper). • Series 4 or 5 usually contains rare minerals like Cobalt or Cadmium (pricier). #artreels #watercolourtips #fineart #pigment #studyart

If you keep lightening your colours with white, stay with us and SAVE this reel for when you need it. 🎨 It’s true that it’s the most common option, but not always the best one: when we add white, we change the base tone and lose saturation. 🎨 Acrylic & oil: lighten with analogous colours. They keep the light without breaking the harmony. 💧 Watercolour: just add more water. The more diluted the pigment is, the lighter it will look. 🌼 Another option: use soft yellows or neutral tones (beige, cream). They lighten while preserving luminosity. 💡 Would you like to discover more tips about colour theory?
