Your chest tightens, your heart races, and it can feel like your body has completely lost control. An anxiety attack tends to build slowly over time. It’s racing thoughts, spiraling worries, and a constant sense of dread that makes it hard to stay present. Instead of an explosive surge of fear, the mind retreats inward trying to manage the overwhelming stream of thoughts. Both are deeply distressing experiences. Both can make a person feel powerless in their own body and mind. They just move through the nervous system in very different ways. If you’re experiencing one, grounding can help bring your body back to the present moment: 1️⃣ Run cold water or ice on your hand, this will cause you to focus on the present and cool your body down 2️⃣ Sit with your arms wrapped around you, the pressure will help trigger the vagus nerve and bring calm 3️⃣ Focus on your breath in for 4, hold for 4, breath out for 4, hold for 4.
