Click the link in my bio for the my Free equations course📙 Parents — this is one of the most common Algebra mistakes I see. Students substitute correctly… but forget to distribute to every term in the parentheses. That one step alone can completely change the answer. After 17 years teaching Algebra, I’ve seen this mistake again and again. If your student struggles with Algebra foundations, I have a free mini-course on multi-step equations that helps students master these skills. Comment READY and I’ll send it to you. #AlgebraHelp #Algebra1 #MathHelp #ParentTips #AlgebraMistakes

There’s no better feeling in math than watching chaos turn into something clean. You start with fractions. Radicals. Parentheses inside parentheses. Everything looks doomed. Then things start canceling. Terms disappear. Numbers simplify. And suddenly… 1. It feels illegal. It feels too easy. But you accept the blessing. Save this for exam season. Tag someone who celebrates when the algebra behaves. Follow for daily math memes + calculus content that actually helps you pass finals.

They have not read the question. They have not looked at the graph. They have not asked what the problem is actually asking. They just see x^2 and their brain goes ➡️ factor it. You have probably seen this moment. One student already writing two parentheses. Another asking “Are we factoring this one too?” Someone checking their neighbor’s answer before finishing the problem. This is not laziness. It is pattern training. Students have learned that math class means ➡️ recognize the type ➡️ apply the memorized steps ➡️ move on. So when the format changes, their brain still jumps to the familiar procedure. Here is what started shifting this in my Algebra 2 classroom. 1️⃣ I slowed down the first step. Before solving anything students answer What is the problem actually asking What information do we have What might the graph look like Sometimes factoring helps. Sometimes it does not. Now the first step is thinking. 2️⃣ I used multiple representations. Students work with ➡️ graphs ➡️ tables ➡️ equations ➡️ contexts Now quadratics are not just procedures. 3️⃣ I built tasks that require decisions. Instead of “solve this” the task asks Which method makes sense here What feature of the graph matters What pattern do you notice Here is the truth. Most Algebra 2 thinking problems are not student problems. They are task design problems. That is exactly why I built the Resource Room as a system. Inside you will find ➡️ math labs that build meaning before procedures ➡️ multiple representation tasks ➡️ discussion prompts that require explanation ➡️ self checking practice that still pushes thinking Lessons designed so students cannot jump straight to the shortcut. If you want Algebra 2 lessons that move students from automatic factoring to actual reasoning 💬 Comment RESOURCE and I will send you the details. And follow for more secondary math strategies that make teaching feel doable again.

The expression 8 / 2(2+2) is basically the math version of a “trick question.” It’s poorly written because it’s intentionally blurry; using a slanted division slash (/) right next to parentheses creates a bit of a tug-of-war. Most modern textbooks and calculators follow the left-to-right rule, where you divide first and then multiply, giving you 16. However, some people were taught a rule called juxtaposition, where numbers “stuck” to a parenthesis get priority, which would lead to 1. Here is a quick “Cheat Sheet” you can save or share with students to help them avoid the common traps of ambiguous math. 🛑 The “Bad Math” Cheat Sheet Goal: Never let a teacher (or a calculator) misunderstand your work. 1. The “Invisible” Multiplication Trap When you see a number stuck to a parenthesis, like 2(4), it’s called juxtaposition. • The Risk: Some people think this means “do this first,” while others treat it as a regular multiplication. • The Fix: Use a clear multiplication symbol (x) or a dot (*) to show it has the same priority as division. • Instead of: 8 / 2(4) • Write: (8 / 2) x 4 2. The Slanted Slash ‘/‘ vs. The Fraction Bar The slanted slash is the biggest culprit in math arguments because it doesn’t clearly show where the “bottom” of the fraction ends. • The Risk: Does 1 / 2x mean (1/2)x or (1/2x)? No one knows! • The Fix: Always use a horizontal fraction bar. It acts like a “fence” that keeps the top and bottom separated. 3. The “Safety Net” Parentheses When in doubt, wrap it up! Parentheses are the only way to “force” a calculator or a person to do math in the order you intended. • To get 16: (8 / 2)(2 + 2) • To get 1: 8 / (2(2 + 2)) Now you know! Save this for later. #mathematics #middleschoolmath #pemdas #algebra #mariamspeaksmath
