The art of the visible mend by @bookhou 🧶 In a world of hyper-speed content, there is something profoundly healing about watching a twill weave develop layer by layer. @bookhou takes us through every intentional step, showing how a vibrant woven patch can breathe new life into a favorite sweater. It’s a gentle reminder that true quality is worth the time it takes to preserve. 😌🧡 - [ HandcraftedBeauty slowcraft, textilesustainability, knitwearrepair AppliquéArt SlowProcess visiblemending craftastherapy ] All rights and intellectual property belong to the original owners. This video demonstrates a creative and decorative way to darn a hole in a sock by transforming the repair into a pink snowflake embroidery. Instead of hiding the damage, embroidery thread is used to create a beautiful snowflake design, turning the repair into a stylish feature. Sometimes our items just need a little tlc 💕 Doing a visible repair using embroidery has meant this jumpsuit can be worn again - thank you Carolyn for making the sustainable choice and choosing to repair rather than replace 💚 To do this yourself, you will need: - some scrap fabric - fabric pen or chalk - some embroidery thread - a hand needle - an embroidery hoop - scissors - an iron (not too hot or you’ll make another hole!!) - sewing machine (optional, you could also do the basting stitch by hand!) If you don’t have these - check your local charity shop or ask a friend to borrow the items! Please share so we can all learn together - plus I’m always here if you need any advice ☺️ #sewingtutorial #repairnotreplace #mending #embroidery #howto

[ad] A spot of invisible knit repair! For this mend, I tried out 'Shio' from @itoyarn - a 100% yarn that's thin enough to use on lightweight knits (or held double/triple for thicker fabrics). Worked a treat! 🧶 Want to learn hownto fix your knits? Here’s to treating our clothes with the care and whimsy they deserve ✨. Visible mending using a duplicate stitch on one of my favorite sweaters. I really like how this side turned out - let me know if I should make the other side symmetrical or try something totally new! This sweater is made from a blended yarn of alpaca, nylon and wool. The 100% wool, embroidery thread looks and feels very similar when it’s stitched into the sweater. I really love when I can use duplicate stitch because it’s a super easy way to create a stitch that looks seamless in knits, and it lets me freestyle a little bit to build up the mend in layers, like I did with this one!

When I proudly showed my partner this *almost invisible* repair I did on the sleeve of his favorite merino jumper, his response was literally: “Oh, wow! I forgot that I still had that jumper, nice!! So I can wear it again tomorrow?” 🪡 I’m not exaggerating when I say that this jumper has been on the mending pile for 2 years (it might even be longer, not sure haha) — I went back to the clips I filmed of my work-in-progress projects drawer back in March 2024, when I shared the very first video of my Unfinished Sewing Business series, and indeed: this jumper was already chilling in the drawer back then 😂 I remember seeing the repair of my red ribbed turtleneck (posted in June 2024) as a “warm up” or “practice round” for this jumper. But halfway through that mending attempt, I gave up trying to make it invisible and went for strong-but-very-visible instead. I simply don’t have as much experience mending knitwear as I have with repairing sewn garments — but I also didn’t want to lower the expectations I set for myself… I really wanted to achieve that beautiful level of completely invisible mending, but apparently didn’t want to put in the time and effort to practice, fail, and learn 😅 Because I kept procrastinating this repair, until… Until when? Until I would magically have the skills to do it, without actually putting in the hours to learn said skill??? So on a random Sunday evening, I spontaneously picked up the jumper to see what had to be done, and decided to just start. I felt a tiny bit of motivation, and tried to embrace that by not letting myself put it back in the drawer again, until! it! was! fixed! Moral of the story: to get better at something, you have to put in the hours, fail, try again, and practice practice practice. Who knew??? Just kidding of course, but sometimes I definitely need to remind myself about that — skills don’t come from luck or genetics: they’re the result of years and years of practice, trial, and lots of error. Time to pick up that project you’ve been putting off for a while! ❤️ [Full transcript of the voice over / subtitles in the comments below!]

Another Love It for Longer episode and this time I’m giving new life to these sneakers! ❤️‍🩹👟 I recently caught myself browsing online for a new pair, then remembered I already have two perfectly wearable pairs in my closet. Instead of buying something new, I decided to upcycle my black and white pair to add a little more texture and colour. 🌈🧶 When I came across the idea of beaded laces on Pinterest, I knew it would be the perfect way to give these kicks a fresh update. 🤭 What do you think of the finished shoes? 👋🏼I’d love to hear your thoughts and whether you’d try this upcycle on a pair of your own. ❤️‍🔥 I’m hoping to transform another pair using Sashiko embroidery next, so stay tuned for the next episode. ✂️🫶🏼 #slowfashion #sewing #thrifting #sustainability #upcycling

I found two 100% pure wool coats at the thrift store. They were beaten and ripped all over. These vintage pieces had not been loved the way they should have. And week after week, no one bought them. The day before my usual thrift store was going to do big swaps and send a lot of the winter stuff to the landfill to make room for new spring items, I picked these two up. They had absolutely beautiful construction on the interior. The wool was certified for quality and was constructed with love. Nonetheless, I decided that instead of mending these two pieces, I would source all of the wool I could and make my own patchwork wool fabric. This allows me to repurpose this beautiful textile and give it another chance at life. Anything that you can do to help the environment is good enough. Whether you want to source your wool new, buying 100% wool is still better than buying synthetic. Thrifting synthetic is still better than buying new synthetic. There are so many ways to help the planet! And spending my morning diligently cutting each piece to an appropriate size, seam ripping and sewing knowing that my creation will not just make someone happy, but help the planet is something that brings me not only immense joy, but also encompassing peace. #upcycling #smallbusiness #naturalfibers #sustainability #sustainableclothing
