Can we talk about Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA)?? Okay so before I start, this isn’t a term that is in the DSM (although, tbh the DSM needs to be updated). Secondarily it is a term we usually see to describe traits in autism, but there is crossover here. PDA is a term used to describe when you are driven to avoid everyday demands and expectations to an extreme extent. Individuals with PDA often exhibit high levels of anxiety and a need for control. Which is why they have a hard time with being told what to do. They may use indirect or socially “manipulative” strategies to avoid tasks or demands, such as distraction, negotiation, or defiance. “I’ll do it later.” “I’ll do it if I finish this level.” “I don’t have to do it.” This concept is a weird one but it’s important because it emphasizes that different brains are motivated by different things. Telling someone what to do might be ideal for one type of wiring but counterproductive for another. Find your motivation. #drsasha #adhd

✅ It's totally normal in our house to hear "Good morning, FK YOU, I hate you...get me breakfast" ✅ Once we went back to the shops to rebuy the same toy for the third time that day. ✅ Im not allowed to wear headphones or loops because it triggers my youngest daughters nervous system. ✅ Im also not allowed to change my hair colour. PDAers don't like change, especially if it's beyond their control. ✅ My partner and I have whispering down to a fine art, our voices can trigger a massive meltdown. ✅ I don't make eyecontact with any other child at school pick up. My PDAer needs to be in control of me to co regulate after school, if I make conversation with anyone but her it can be disastrous. ✅ I've learnt the art of saying 'sorry' or 'you are right' when it's not warranted. Sometimes it's just what is needed to keep to the peace. All of the above probably sounds nuts to a non PDA household but you can bet your last brain cell that the most wild methods are common practice in homes like mine to keep a PDAers threat response at bay. You can call it lazy parenting, or being taken control of but it's actually a fine art and extremely difficult to get right...I would go so far as saying that most non PDA parents wouldn't last a day in our shoes, which is why a lot of families who aren't willing to adapt to this style of low demand parenting end up making life for their PDAer a lot harder than it should be. What has become your 'normal' that would have other families questioning your parenting methods/mental health/sanity? 👇🏽🤡 #pathologicaldemandavoidance #autism #pdaautism #autistic #autisticgirl #neurodiverse #neurodivergent #pdafamily #lowdemandparenting

Both of our boys have PDA, and if you’ve ever tried to communicate with someone who has Pathological Demand Avoidance, you’ll know that the usual parenting advice simply doesn’t work. PDA brains experience everyday demands as pressure - and pressure triggers anxiety, overwhelm, and shutdowns. n this video I’m snaring the simple communication shifts thaf make a huge meone 9,902 542 calm when their/nervous system goes into defence mode. Autism Level 1 isn’t “mild.” It’s invisible. Which means it’s often misunderstood, minimized, or outright dismissed. Because what people don’t see is where most of it lives. It shows up as: – Extreme masking that holds it together all day and collapses at home – Anxiety that looks like control, rigidity, or “attitude” – Meltdowns that are internalized, delayed, or saved for the safest person – Sensory overwhelm that doesn’t always look dramatic—but is constant – Exhaustion from performing “fine” in a world that isn’t built for their nervous system – A child who is praised for being articulate, capable, or smart… while quietly drowning It also often shows up as PDA (Pathological Demand Avoidance / Pervasive Drive for Autonomy)— where everyday demands trigger a threat response, not defiance. In those moments, behavior can escalate fast: – Verbal aggression – Physical outbursts – Sudden rage that seems to come out of nowhere Not because the child is violent or oppositional—but because their nervous system feels trapped. This isn’t “bad behavior.” It’s fight-or-flight. And here’s what’s critical to understand: Most autistic kids—including those with Level 1 support needs—are far more likely to internalize distress than externalize it. When aggression does show up, it’s almost always situational, relational, and rooted in overwhelm—not intent. There is nothing mild about chronic nervous system overload. There is nothing mild about living in a constant state of vigilance. There is nothing mild about a child who is trying desperately to stay in control of their own body and mind. “Level 1” doesn’t mean low impact. It means low visibility. And when something is invisible, parents are left fighting to be believed, kids are left without support, and everyone is told they’re overreacting. You’re not. And neither is your child. 🫶 #autism #asdmom #asdparenting #asdparent #autismacceptance #audhd

So you’re avoiding something you really really have to do… The extreme version of this condition is sometimes categorized as Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA). Tomlin Wilding uses the same acronym but calls it Pervasive Drive for Autonomy. This might be a better term because it’s more affirming (resisting expectations is not always pathological behavior, after all), and also because it places the desire for autonomy front and center. What have you been avoiding or putting off? 🤔 #adhd #adhdtips #neurodivergent #adhdproductivity #demandavoidance

💸🧠 31 tiny ways to get richer in 2025 (even if you have ADHD) - Day Ten We are almost a third of the way through these, guys, but there are still some of my best tips to come 👀 Today is about finding an accountability partner - because it’s really hard to do this alone. Finding someone to share your goals and plans with, who will support, encourage and challenge you without judgement, can often be the difference between sinking and swimming. You might choose a friend, colleague or family member, but this is also one of the primary functions of a financial coach. We help you to make the plan, but we also hold you to account as well. Accountability can be a tricky beast to wrangle when you’re neurodivergent, because it can trigger something called Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA), which is where as soon as something is expected of us, it starts to feel physically impossible to actually do. So choosing the right partner is even more important when you have ADHD - you need someone who understands your traits, will handle your defensiveness with care and won’t be fobbed off easily. I’m currently building an off- platform community with an accountability function, so if this sounds like something you could use, comment WAITING LIST and I’ll drop you a DM ❤️ Have you got an accountability partner or someone you share your money goals/wins/mess ups with?

5 Traits Of Pathological Demand Avoidance YOU MISS! Here are 5 MUST SEE traits of Pathological Demand Avoidance! This condition is an atypical autism condition that is sometimes co-occurring with an autism diagnosis but can be independent. Here are 5 traits that you must see. 1.Lability Of Mood A person with PDA will have mood control issues and can be shown to change their mood moment to moment. 2.Comfortable in role play or pretend play Because of the use of masking in social situations a person with PDA will be very comfortable in playing games of acting and pretended role play. 3.My have hyper moments and cry a lot Due to mood and emotional control issues, a person of PDA may have hyper-active moments and similarly have moments of upset and crying. 4.May have selective mutism A PDA person can sometimes display selective mutism in situations of social events or social environments. 5.Triggers may be hard to pin down You may notice that a person with PDA can get triggered at random times, but you are not able to notice what the triggers are. I would love to know your thoughts on this topic as lots of people ask me about PDA and I think a conversation needs to happen. Please leave me a comment below.

Many kids with high connection needs have an easily activated nervous system, which is a core component of PDA - pathological demand avoidance or persistent drive for autonomy. When people read about PDA, we often hear the extreme examples from externalizers. But the internationals continue to go unrecognized. Pretty similar to how we recognize autism stereotypes and miss the subtle or internalized cues- we aren’t always recognizing PDA. So yes, PDA can be loud, big, and extreme. It can also be masked at school and visible at home. A core area of support is giving autonomy and supporting anxiety for these less obvious kids.

Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA) is a complex autism profile characterized by an overwhelming need to avoid demands and requests from others. Individuals with PDA often display a range of strategies to resist these demands, such as appearing manipulative or socially avoidant. They may have difficulties with social communication, anxiety, and regulating their emotions. #pda #pathologicaldemandavoidance #autism #mentalhealth #psychiatry #psychiatrist
