PEBest Ski Tour in the Alps? The Bernese Oberland Traverse
Forget about the “Haute Route” because the Berner Oberland takes ski touring to another, much higher level. Yes, this route is literally more “haute” than the Haute Route.
You’ve got countless variations; there’s no real set route, you can just blaze your way between peaks and passes, setting up shop for the night at legendary Swiss mountain refuges like the Konkordia and Finsteraarhorn huts.
The tour is a great opportunity to bag various peaks and descents, like the 4,000-meter Finsteraarhorn, as well as other famous 4,000ers like Mönch and the Jungfrau.
The Alps’ largest glaciers are also located here, like the 23 km Aletsch Glacier.
The ski terrain is a mixed bag, but there is no limit to the low-angle glacier skiing you can find on this traverse.
The biggest limiting factor, besides weather, will be availability at the mountain huts. You’ll probably have to book in advance.
With sun in the forecast, conditions are lining up perfectly for some epic skiing in the Bernese Alps. Check out the PeakVisor app for limitless ideas on where to go.
