TOPitting edema is one of those symptoms that looks simple on the surface but tells us a lot about what’s happening inside the body.
.
In this video, you’ll see how gentle pressure on the lower leg leaves a temporary indentation—this is called “pitting.” It happens when fluid builds up in the tissues faster than the body can clear it.
.
We commonly see this after surgery, long periods of sitting, changes in circulation, or when the lymphatic system is working harder than usual.
.
The key is not to panic, but to understand what it means. Pitting edema helps us assess fluid balance, tissue health, and progress with recovery. It also guides decisions about elevation, mobility, compression, and monitoring for changes over time.
.
If you ever notice swelling that feels different, worsens suddenly, or doesn’t improve with movement and elevation, bring it to your therapist or physician’s attention. Early recognition makes a big difference in recovery and comfort.
