AUDid you know that your histogram isn’t totally accurate?
The histogram can only read data from the JPEG preview of your image, but the RAW file contains much more data than the JPEG.
So why does this matter?
If you’re exposing your image as bright as possible without clipping the highlights, you may actually have an extra stop or two of light to use. Even a single stop can result in an image that is just a big sharper in the shadows with less digital noise.
Test this out on your own camera and see how many stops you can “overexpose” and still recover the highlights. Next time you’re out shooting a scene with very high dynamic range, it might just yield a slightly higher image quality by taking a slightly brighter exposure.
