THMost people don’t realize that apples with a #4 PLU code are conventionally grown, meaning they’ve likely been sprayed with pesticides and then coated in wax to make them look shiny on grocery store shelves. The Environmental Working Group ranks apples on the Dirty Dozen list year after year, which highlights the produce with the highest levels of pesticide residues. While washing can help remove some of the wax and surface chemicals, it won’t remove everything. Choosing organic apples when possible, or at least giving conventional ones a good scrub can help reduce your family’s exposure.
A University of Massachusetts study found that soaking apples in a 1% baking soda solution (≈1 tsp per 2 cups water) for 12–15 minutes removed 95.6% of the pesticide phosmet and 80% of thiabendazole.
